The 45th President of the United States has been commented upon for his unnatural looking hair. Taking into account his age, it doesn’t come as a surprise that he may have been experiencing some hair loss. After all, there aren’t many 70 year old men with stressful jobs that have a full head of hair.
No one can be blamed for trying to fight hair thinning and hair loss, or for looking for the best drug or best hair loss supplement to combat it, but it’s important to remember that every drug has side effects. What are those side effects? If we’re talking about hair loss drugs, then the side effects may vary. Recently there has been increasing evidence that one of the most prescribed types of drugs, 5 α-Reductase inhibitors cause impotence and mental confusion.
Why take 5 α-Reductase inhibitors?
Donald Trump’s personal doctor, Harold N. Bornstein, revealed that Trump has all of his own hair, but takes a standard daily dose of 5α-Reductase inhibitor. 5 α-Reductase inhibitors were initially developed to treat prostate cancer and were found to also reduce DHT (dihydrotestosterone). This hormone is responsible for diminishing follicle growth and causes male and female pattern baldness.
The choice of taking 5α-Reductase inhibitors is up to the patient, but healthcare professionals need to inform them of the possible side effects.
Because of the fact that 5α-Reductase inhibitors work on a hormonal level, they may affect sexual function, potentially causing impotence.
It should be noted that 5α-Reductase inhibitors are not approved for use in female pattern baldness, so women have very limited options.
Persistent side effects are real
5α-Reductase inhibitors have helped lots of men suffering from hair loss and thinning, but in recent years they have come under harsh criticism and a large number of lawsuits have ensued. Is there something we should be worried about?
Many publications in scientific journals have shown evidence of not only sexual dysfunction while taking 5α-Reductase inhibitors, but long-term, persistent side effects.
A paper published in March 2017 showed that the risk of persistent erectile dysfunction (PED) was higher in men with longer exposure to 5α-Reductase inhibitors. Among young men, longer exposure to 5α-Reductase inhibitors posed a greater risk of PED than all other assessed risk factors. Specifically, 1.4% of men studied developed PED that continued for a median of 1,348 days after stopping the drugs.
This research may force the FDA’s hand in altering labeling and make one think twice before trying it.
What are the alternatives?
These side effects pose a serious health risk and potential psychological damage. Men and women seeking a drug-free alternative should first look into the offered solution. Many food supplements have no science behind them.
